AQUABATTERY wins EUSEW2025 award in Brussels

AQUABATTERY wins Innovation Award vote

[PRESS RELEASE] Brussels, June 10, 2025 - AQUABATTERY, the company behind the groundbreaking saltwater-based long-duration energy storage (LDES) pilot, has won the European Sustainable Energy Award 2025 in the innovation category for the world's most sustainable, affordable and scalable LDES solution.

The project won first place in an online public vote and received the award from Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Clean, Just and Competitive Transition, at the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) awards ceremony on June 10 in Brussels.

With support from the European Innovation Council and five partners from the energy, housing and utility sectors, AQUABATTERY launched a pilot in Delft in November. There, Europe's largest and most advanced saltwater flow battery was tested, with the aim of gathering crucial insights that will accelerate product development and enable market introduction in 2026.

“By using table salt and water - abundant and environmentally friendly materials - we can reduce Europe's dependence on critical raw materials, avoid the severe environmental degradation caused by open-pit mining of lithium and rare earths, and eliminate the fire, toxicity and explosion risks to humans and habitat near battery sites,” explained Jiajun Cen, co-founder and CEO of AQUABATTERY.
