About the role

Join AQUABATTERY today, a pioneering climatetech startup with a mission to commercialise a affordable, safe and sustainable long duration energy storage (LDES) based on saltwater. Our innovative flow battery technology offers an LDES solution without relying on critical or toxic raw materials.

With fresh funding secured and our first commercial product on the horizon, this is an exciting time to become part of our growing team and contribute to building a cleaner, more resilient energy future.

As a Battery Scientist / Electrochemist at Aquabattery, you will lead the electrochemical optimization of our acid-base flow battery technology. Your mission is to investigate, identify and integrate novel electrode materials and water-based organic electrolytes to significantly boost battery performance, and cycle life. This role is designed for a researcher who can bridge the gap between fundamental electrochemistry and applied battery engineering.

What you’ll be doing

Electrode Material Innovation

  • Investigate and identify novel electrode materials to minimize overpotentials and enhance kinetics.
  • Design and execute experiments to characterize the electrochemical surface area and mass-transport properties of new materials within our specific acid/base chemistry.

Next-Gen Electrolyte Development (ERS System)

  • Identify and validate novel water-based organic electrolytes for the Electrode Rinse Solution (ERS) system to improve stability and prevent crossover-related degradation.
  • Perform solubility, stability, and electrochemical window studies on organic redox couples to ensure compatibility with our long-duration storage goals.

Electrochemical Characterization & Diagnostics

  • Conduct advanced electrochemical analyses, including charge/discharge testing.
  • Use Diagnostic tools providing the R&D team with a clear roadmap for stack operation optimization.

Data-Driven Optimization

  • Apply an excellent attention to detail when documenting long-term cycling stability and degradation mechanisms.
  • Stay at the forefront of LDES (Long-Duration Energy Storage) research, regularly reviewing literature to identify emerging trends in electrochemistry.

Function requirements:

Education and experience

  • PhD in Electrochemistry, Organic Chemistry, or Materials Science with a heavy focus on electrochemical energy storage.
  • Practical experience with Potentio-stats, flow cell assembly, and electrolyte preparation. You are someone who thrives in the lab.
  • Deep understanding of redox-flow battery principles, ion-exchange membranes, and the interplay between fluid mechanics and electrochemistry.

Knowledge and skills

  • Exceptional attention to detail in experimental setup and data logging.
  • A proactive approach to troubleshooting complex electrochemical phenomena and "outside-the-box" thinking.
  • Fluency in English and the ability to present complex scientific data clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Why AQUABATTERY?

  • The opportunity to provide vital support to the energy transition at our state-of-the-art ETCA facility.
  • A collaborative, multicultural work environment where practical observations and technical insights are valued.
  • A structured, performance-driven culture that supports professional growth and technical skill development.
  • Competitive salary plus Stock Appreciation Rights (SARs)
  • Work-life balance, including 25 vacation days and flexible working arrangements.
  • Green pension scheme (50% employer contribution) and collective health insurance discount.
  • Company bike for commuting.
  • Regular team events and opportunities to shape the future of clean energy.

About our company

AQUABATTERY is a climate-tech start-up, based in the Netherlands. Our vision is to empower the transition to net-zero by providing the world’s most scalable, sustainable and safe long duration energy storage solution. We do so through our revolutionary technology, which enables the storage of electricity in just saltwater. The world will need high volumes of energy storage to enable reliance on renewable energy sources like solar PV and wind energy, even if the sun does not shine or the wind does not blow. Our technology has been successfully demonstrated through several pilot installations in the Netherlands and in Italy. Our international team reinforces our impact-focused culture every day; taking on challenges and celebrating successes together. If you are excited to know more, check out our open positions to join the ride!
